Roberta and her trusty steed River

Roberta McGowan founded Equine Images Photography in 1998 in Colorado following a successful career on the East Coast as a photojournalist, corporate photographer, and portrait specialist.

Her images of horses, cowgirls, cowboys,  and the wild west are photographed with reverence for the spirit of the animals and people presented.

From her earliest years with a point and shoot camera to professional newspaper photographer to corporate photojournalist, Roberta has carried with her the joy of capturing those very special moments in time.

Roberta entered the world of horse photography with the goal of honoring the equine spirit. Her interpretive portraits find that physical reflection of the beautiful soul within each animal.

Roberta is an award winning photographer, having been honored by the New Jersey Press Association, the New York Institute of Photography, and having been named Photographer of the Year by the Philadelphia Chapter of Women in Communications.  She is active with the Roaring Fork Valley Horse Council and is a member of the Equine Photographers Network, an international professional organization.

Artist Statement

The photographic images which I create are dynamic and thought provoking; portraying fluid, real life experiences. Strong, true colors reflect the tough and gritty lives of the horses, cowgirls and cowgirls depicted.

The equipment I use is secondary to the images: a method of bringing back my interpretation. The digital darkroom plays a very minor role in what the audience sees.

I make my photographs from the perspective of the subjects, yet the viewer is an integral part of the artistic process. The viewer sees what the subjects are feeling, and the subjects appear if they are responding to the viewer's reactions.

With a photojournalist approach, my style is powerful yet subtle, more than “capturing a moment in time,” I work to savor magical human and equine connections.

I journey to the real West that still exists in the high deserts and sweeping grandeur of the Rocky Mountains. Please join with to marvel at nature's glories.
